Story Explanation
Exorcism Scene
The film opens with the exorcism of a 15-year-old girl named Hannah Grace. She is possessed by a dangerous demon. Priests attempt to save her, but the demon proves to be incredibly powerful.
During the exorcism, Hannah turns violent and kills one of the priests. When the situation spirals completely out of control, Hannah's father suffocates her with a pillow to prevent her from taking any more lives.
However, even after her death, the evil does not end.
Megan Reed’s Past
Three months later, the story focuses on Megan Reed. Megan was formerly a police officer, but she fell into a depression following the death of her partner. She began consuming alcohol and pills.
After completing rehab, she takes a job on the night shift at a hospital morgue to start a new life.
Hannah’s Body Arrives
One night, a badly damaged corpse is brought to the morgue. The body belongs to Hannah Grace. It is reported that a man had been attempting to burn the body.
Strange occurrences begin to unfold as Megan photographs the body and scans its fingerprints. The computer repeatedly glitches, and the mortuary drawers begin to open on their own.
Paranormal Activities Begin
Megan searches for Hannah on the internet and discovers that she had died three months earlier.
She also learns that Hannah's eyes were brown, yet the eyes of the corpse are blue.
Just then, an unidentified man breaks into the morgue and attempts to steal the body. Before being apprehended, he utters just one sentence:
> She is not dead.
Hannah Comes Back
Gradually, Hannah's body begins to move. She is even seen crawling in the CCTV footage.
One by one, the security guards and staff present in the morgue fall victim to her. Hannah brutally kills people, and subsequently, her body slowly begins to restore itself.
Megan now becomes convinced that an evil force resides within the body.
Truth About Hannah
Later, it is revealed that the man who had come to steal the body was Hannah's father.
He tells Megan that the demon residing within Hannah refuses to leave her body, even after her death. He had attempted to burn the body several times, but each time, the demon would kill someone.
He claimed that Hannah keeps restoring her body by killing others.
Final Fight
Megan and Hannah's father attempt to burn the body together. However, Hannah attacks once again.
She throws her father into the fire and begins chasing Megan. Megan's police friend also arrives at the scene, but Hannah attempts to kill him as well using her demonic powers.
Ultimately, Megan summons her courage and pushes Hannah completely into the fire.
Ending Explained
Eventually, Megan makes a full recovery. She has given up taking pills and alcohol.
But just then, the very same fly—the one that had previously landed on Hannah's body—lands on her hand. This hints that the evil may not be over yet.
However, Megan kills the fly, demonstrating that she has now become stronger than before.
