Story Overview

The story of  The Cursed begins with a battlefield scene in 1917, where doctors extract a mysterious silver bullet from the body of a British captain. The narrative then flashes back 35 years to a village where Edward lives with his family. Edward's father serves as the village head and seizes control of the tribal people's land. When the tribe protests, the villagers attack them and bury their female leader alive. Before she dies, she casts a terrifying curse upon the entire village.

Some time later, Edward and his friends discover a mysterious silver object, following which horrifying attacks and brutal murders begin to plague the village. People gradually start transforming into wolf-like creatures. Just then, an investigator named John McBride arrives in the village and attempts to uncover the truth behind this curse. During his investigation, he discovers that the curse is linked to silver and black magic. Ultimately, a battle against the creatures ensues with the aid of silver bullets, and a shocking truth is revealed: the wounded captain shown at the very beginning was, in fact, Edward himself, grown to adulthood.

Atmosphere and Horror Experience

Watching this film, one gets the distinct impression that the setting is a genuine village. It features dark, mist-shrouded forests, and the village itself has been crafted so realistically—populated by characters who feel like authentic villagers—that the suspense occasionally builds to such a pitch that you are left wondering what is going to happen next.

It can be quite a frightening experience to watch; the film also prominently showcases the surrounding forests and fields. Furthermore, the effective use of background sound and slow camera movements combine to make this movie truly terrifying.

Cinematography and Visual Style

In this film—whether it is a village setting, an indoor scene, or even a scene set in the jungle—everything feels completely authentic.

I particularly appreciate the use of light and silence in this film; the camera angles and slow-motion movements are excellent, and the use of eerie sound effects is also highly effective.

Background Music and Sound Design

In any film, the most crucial elements are the background music and the subtle moments of silence, within which eerie sounds play a pivotal role.

The sound effects in this film are excellent, effectively keeping the audience captivated.

Strong and Weaknesses of The Movie

Strengths  Weaknesses

Slow-burn suspense keeps the tension alive. Not suitable for fans of fast-paced horror movies.
Impressive cinematography with dark visuals. Movie has limited jump scares.
Dark gothic visuals enhance the horror atmosphere. Some scenes feel stretched because of pacing.
Powerful sound design increases tension and fear. Requires patience to fully enjoy the story.
Solid performances from the cast. Psychological horror may not appeal to everyone.
Focuses more on psychological fear and mystery. Dark tone can feel heavy for casual viewers.

Ending Explained

If you watch this movie through to the end, it proves to be both terrifying and deeply emotional, as the nature of the curse is finally revealed. In the climax, all the villagers are hiding inside a church when a monster—mimicking the voice of a young boy—calls out to its mother from outside the door. The mother, deceived by the voice, goes and opens the church door; after a brief moment of silence, the monsters storm into the church and begin slaughtering everyone inside.

Ultimately, a bullet fired to take down the monster strikes the girl's mother; this emotional shock causes the boy—who had transformed into the monster—to break free from the curse. Witnessing this scene brings tears to the eyes of the audience.

Ultimately, we discover that this curse is not supernatural, but rather the result of human cruelty and violence.

Conclusion

The Cursed is a stylish, disturbing, and visually impressive horror film that deeply impresses audiences with its haunting atmosphere, strong performances, and mysterious storytelling.

The movie leaves a strong impression on viewers, particularly because of the frequent on-screen appearances of the monster, and the masterful way in which the music—along with the scenes set in the forest and the village—has been seamlessly integrated to complement the film's overall tone.
